Hi! I’m Miss Lilly, A North Carolina based Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP). I hold a Master’s degree in communication disorders and have a background in psychology, autism, and Spanish language. My mission is to create a community for SLPs, parents, students and other professionals surrounding language development in both monolingual and bilingual learners.

What kind of work schedule do you have? What is your ideal schedule?

While I do love the 4 day work week, 10 hour days certainly has its draw backs. Monday-Thursday I am exhausted and rarely have time for errands, appointments, chores or self care. I do love the 3 day weekend, but Friday is usually my “life catch up” day to fit all of those things in.

Imitation is a core skill for learning how to talk - little ones observe what others around them say or do and then copy to learn words/signs/gestures.

When building early communication skills, incorporate imitation of simples sounds or actions as much as possible! It can be gestures like waving or clapping, playing with toys you can shake or spin, using simple vowel sounds - oooh, ahhhh, uh-oh, or consonant + vowel combinations - weee, yay, boo. The more our little ones have practice imitating, the better prepared they will be to copy words, signs, or gestures.

Ok so I actually soft-launched this project - a blog and resource center for all things pediatric, developmental, bilingual, and personal - awhile back but was waiting until I felt it was really “good enough” to start publicly sharing. So after many (MANY! this was originally a COVID times project 😅) months, I’ve given up on trying to make it perfect and just want it to be out there. I may have gone a bit overboard with creating this resource - I had to stop myself at 10 different data sheet styles but still have ideas for more! “Say…..” is such a common way to cue a child

“Say…..” is such a common way to cue a child, but it isn’t a very common way of communicating in standard American English. My go to when I feel that a high level of direct cueing is still needed is to switch to “tell me” with either a direct or indirect cue because at least this is a phrase we’d actually use - for example “say what you want for dinner” sounds odd but “tell me what you want for dinner” would be ok. Trying to model speech in a way that is natural to the language will ultimately help with language development.

Who else would you add???

One of the best ways to connect with kids is to know about the things they’re into! When you see a character on their shirt or shoes, search for stickers or coloring sheets to have available, or even just what small talk to make with a new friend - knowing the kid trends can be vital. These are the biggest ones in my area and age group right now. What else would you include?

As we approach the holidays and the *official* start of winter, I’m grateful for the FULL and fulfilling last few months we’ve had.

- choosing our perfect tree over thanksgiving weekend 🌲
- a chilly but beautiful Florida trip with family and my niece pup 🐶
-football games near and far 🏈
-celebrating an old friend 👰‍♀️
-throwing a “surprise-ish” birthday for my little brother 🎂

Going bagless can be intimidating, but there are so many functional ways to use what is already in their environment.

1. Kitchen items: play cooking, pretend picnic, “washing” dishes. Or even incorporate real meal or snack time! Vocab: more, help, open, eat, yum, all done, clean up.

2. Hide and seek: Young ones tend to be thrilled by this game even if you’re hiding in plain sight. Or if hiding yourself isn’t an option, try hiding toys or other objects around the room. Vocab: numbers, where, under, behind, found, there.

3. Toy bath time: this game is always a big hit especially when real water is involved-but definitely not necessary if you don’t have access to a sink or outdoor space as there will almost surely be spills. A simple bowl or bucket and towel can be enough. Anything from dolls to animals or even a toy car wash can bring great joy. Vocab: dirty, wet, soap, scrub, wash, water, dry, clean.

4. Movement games: simon says, freeze dance, hot potato, yoga stretches, head-shoulders, ring around the Rosie, other songs with dance move or actions. Vocab: go, stop, up, down, move, again, your turn.

5. Blanket fort: you may want to get permission first as this requires a little extra set up and clean up, but you can include it all in the activity! Vocab: wow, in, out, over, on top, sleep/wake up, peek a boo, take down, fold.

Direct feedback is great but can also become frustrating for our friends who are trying their best but just aren’t getting it. If it wasn’t correct, don’t reinforce as if it was because we ultimately aren’t helping them learn, but we also don’t have to get hung up on items that are still a bit too tough or only provide negative reactions. We owe it to our kids to be supportive but also honest. What other phrases would you add?

These are a few case history questions I always ask caregivers in a developmental eval to ensure I’m getting the whole picture. Milestones and skill questions are important to know about but I find that asking these during case history helps ensure I understand the impact on the family, and can also be great supporting my justification for recommendations.
